Where Can a Doctor Still be a Healthcare Professional?

Physicians face increasing pressure to sell services and churn patients – partly to pay off their loans for medical school, partly to pay for malpractice insurance, partly to cover their administrative overhead, and partly to earn the financial rewards of their profession.  Now, it seems that hospitals are on a hiring spree, pulling in physicians to gain market share and increase their revenue.

The apparent result is higher healthcare costs and less motivation for physicians to provide quality healthcare.  (see Rising Hospital Employment of Physicians: Better Quality, Higher Costs?)

I wonder, how can we improve the quality of care and let doctors do the actual work of caring for people without eroding their own quality of life?
